Red-hot Taiwo Awoniyi proud and happy over Super Eagles call-up
After missing out in recent Super Eagles call-ups, Nottingham Forest red-hot striker Taiwo Awoniyi is proud and happy following his invitation for the AFCON Qualifier Vs Sierra Leone.
Rewarded for his sensational form at Nottingham Forest where he scored six goals in the last four games to gude the club to top-flight safety, Awoniyi is among 23-Eagles who will prosecute Nigeria’s next international engagement.
In a chat with SOCCERNET, Awoniyi expressed delight at the latest opportunity to represent his fatherland.
He said ” It’s a great privilege for any player, it’s an honour, and it should not be taken for granted,Â
“I’m very happy I was invited, I am proud and overjoyed as well. However, the Super Eagles is not a home for everybody, you can’t be there forever because it is not for one player.”Â
Having not played for the Eagles since 2022, Awoniyi acknowledges invitation to the National team is not the exclusive right of any player, reason he won’t take it for granted when Nigeria file out vs Sierra Leone on June 18 at the Samuel Kanyon Stadium in Liberia.
“You may be there today and not be there tomorrow. But the main thing is that you should put in your best when you get the opportunity, ” he continued.
“Playing for your country is a pride for any player, and if you look at the Premier League, the Bundesliga, the Laliga, and other leagues, we have a lot of Nigerian players doing well.
“When they make the lists, Nigerians would always ask why a certain player is there on it. Nigerians would always have something to say, that is to show how big the Nation is in terms of talent.
“So I tell myself that getting the call up does not mean I should take it for granted. I’m happy I’m there, but I believe it’s a big honour and privilege.” Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi said
