Rena Wakama Honoured by Western Carolina University

Rena Wakama, head coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been recognised by her former university, Western Carolina University, for her impressive achievements and contribution to basketball.
Wakama made history last year by becoming the first woman to coach Nigeria to an AfroBasket Women’s title. She received the special award during a ceremony at the university’s campus in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
The award celebrates her quick rise in coaching and her strong leadership with D’Tigress, who have dominated African basketball since she took charge. Under her guidance, Nigeria have won consecutive continental titles and improved their performance on the world stage.
Speaking at the event, Wakama thanked the university for its role in her development.
“I’m deeply honoured to be recognised by Western Carolina University. This place played a big part in shaping me as both an athlete and a coach. I’m grateful for the support and motivated to keep pushing forward,” she said.
The honour also highlights Wakama’s growing reputation as one of Africa’s most successful young coaches and a role model for women in sport.
D’Tigress are now preparing for their next international competitions as they look to build on their recent success.
