Revealed: The reason 3SC appointed Edith Agoye as Fatai Amoo’s replacement

On Thursday, Shooting Stars replaced Fatai Amoo with their former striker Edith Agoye as head coach.

The five-time champions will be playing in the National League next season having been relegated from the Premier League last season.

Fatai Amoo, his coaching staffs and some of the players were released by the club as they prepare for life in the second tier club competition in Nigeria.

But the former Espérance Sportive de Tunis attacking midfielder who was one of the coaches that assisted Amoo was chosen out of many coaches that were interviewed for the position.

The Executive Chairman of the club, Gbolagade Busari, said the management chose the former Nigeria international because of his knowledge of the team – and because of the need to maintain continuity in the development of the young players.

Busari said, “The majority of our players are from the feeders team and to continue inspiring their development, we felt Agoye is in a good position to do this.”

The chairman said Agoye’s mandate was to lead 3SC back to the Nigerian top flight.

According to sources close to the Ibadan based club, the club settled for Agoye because they could not afford the salaries demanded by the coaches they contacted for the job.

The source said, “Shooting Stars considered their purse before settling for Agoye. Apart from the fact that he has been a part of the team, they looked at their purse and discovered that they couldn’t afford a coach with a big salary while playing in the lower league,” the source said.

“The NNL doesn’t attract as much money as the Premier League so they needed to cut their coat according to their cloth.”
