Revival-chasing Kelechi Nwakali wins award at Barnsley

Revival-chasing Nigeria Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has won Barnsley’s Goal of the Month award for December 2024.

Nwakali, who joined Barnsley last summer, has been getting more game time recently. When he first arrived at the club, he didn’t play much, but since the start of this year, he has been featured in more matches.

The midfielder has played in six of Barnsley’s last seven games and scored one goal. That goal came last month, helping Barnsley secure a 2-1 win over Exeter at St James Park. The win ended Barnsley’s three-game losing streak and helped them win three of their next four matches.

In recognition of his goal, Nwakali has now been named the winner of the Goal of the Month award at Barnsley.

This is a big achievement for Nwakali, as he is quickly becoming a fan favourite due to his strong performances. The former Arsenal player will be hoping to continue his good form and help Barnsley achieve promotion to the English Championship.

Nwakali’s ultimate goal, however, is to secure a move to a bigger club. He was one of the standout players at the 2015 Under-17 World Cup, but he has not yet reached his full potential. After joining Arsenal in 2016, he had several loan spells but failed to make the first team.

He left Arsenal in 2019 and has since played for Huesca, Alcorcon, Ponferradina, and Chaves. At Barnsley, he seems to have found more stability. If he continues to perform well in League One, he may get a move to a bigger club by next summer.
