Rivers United captain Festus Austin retires from active football, gets new appointment

Rivers United FC captain Festus Austin has retired from active football and has been appointed Team Coordinator of the 2021/2022 NPFL winners.

Festus Austin spent a good number of years with Rivers United FC and enjoyed cordial on and offield relationship with the Port Harcourt based outfit.

” We are delighted to announce that Festus Austin has been appointed our new Team Coordinator, ” Rivers United FC media officer Charles Mayuku announced on Monday August 14, 2023.

” Austin, a dedicated solid centre-back during his active days assumes the new role ahead of the 2023/2024 season having served dutifully as the captain of Rivers United.

” We wish Festus Austin every success as our Team Coordinator, ” the statement concluded.

In reaction to the appointment the now former Rivers United FC skipper shared words of appreciation on his social media handle for the clubs sponsors, management, coaching staff and former teammates.

Festus Austin wrote ” Let me use this opportunity to appreciate the Commissioner for Sports in Rivers State, Barr. Chris Green, the General Manager, Dr. Okey Kpalukwu, Management, the Technical Manager, Stanley Eguma, Coaches, Players and Support Staff.

” It is a huge honour bestowed upon me to serve in this capacity as Team Coordinator having dutifully served as the title-winning skipper of this great club Rivers United FC

“I am assuring everyone that I will even do more than what I did in the past to ensure that I contribute my part for the success of the club.”

” God bless Rivers United FC ”

Ahead of the 2023/2024 season, Rivers United FC have announced the appointment of striker Nyima Nwagua as captain of the team in place of the retired Festus Austin.

Nwagua had in the last season captained the side on numerous occasions.
