Rivers United rout Bloemfontein Celtic in Porto Novo
Through to face Enyimba in the CAF Confederation Cup
NPFL leaders, Rivers United faced South African side Bloemfontein Celtic in a rescheduled second leg tie of the first preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup. The match was held at the Stade Charles de Gaulle in Porto Novo, a neutral ground due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Rivers United won the first leg in South Africa 2-0, before winning 3-0 in the second leg to win 5-0 on aggregate.
The Port Harcourt-based side wasted no time in showing their intentions as midfield lynchpin, Godwin Aguda added to his goal in the first leg by opened the scoring inside the first minute. The midfielder rifled in a second in first half added time to give Rivers United a four goal cushion. Striker, Fortune Omoniwari, who scored Rivers United’s other goal in the first leg also scored as soon as the second half resumed to seal the victory for the Pride of Rivers.
Aguda has now scored 7 goals in 9 appearances in his first season with Rivers United. Omoniwari also has two goals in the CAF Confederation Cup as well as another 2 in the league.
Rivers United now face fellow Nigerian side, Enyimba in the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup over two legs on February 14th and 21st.
