Rivers United sack Wily Udube as Stanley Eguma escapes axe
Stanley Eguma will remain as Rivers United coach, but his trusted assistant Wily Udube was not so lucky after the Port Harcourt club carried out what could best be described as a massive house cleaning exercise ahead of the new NPFL season.
It was gathered that on Monday all the team coaches except Eguma were welcomed back to the team with bad news just weeks after several players were also flushed out.
Top of the affected coaches was Udube, who had previously worked with Abia Warriors, FC Ifeanyiubah, Gabros FC and most recently as caretaker coach of Nnewi United. He spent last season at Rivers United.
“Management of the club however wishes not to renew your contract”, the letter conveying the coaches sack read in part before going ahead to wish them best of sporting career in their future engagements.
Rivers United struggled to finish the season on safe spot despite emerging as runners-up in the 2015/2016 campaign, a performance that handed them a CAF Champions League ticket, but the Stanley Eguma charges lost 4-3 to Al-Merreikh of Sudan in the final qualifying games.
They however went on to qualify for the group stage of the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup following a 2-0 aggregate win over Rwandan side.
