Rohr: I only invited Musa as a non-playing captain

Nigeria’s Franco-German technical adviser, Gernot Rohr has cleared the air on his invitation of Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa for the final two AFCON 2021 qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho following extensive backlash from many corners of the media after the roster for the games was released.

Rohr stated that Musa was only invited to play the role of a captain off the pitch, as he is not going to play in any of the two games this month and was called up outside of the usual 23 man squad as the 24th man.

The 28 year old Ahmed Musa, who has been without a club since October 2020 when he left Saudi Arabian side, Al Nassr. He has since been linked with moves to English Premier League side, West Bromwich Albion and his former club, CSKA Moscow, but none of the links materialised. Musa has scored 15 goals in 95 appearances for the Super Eagles since making his debut as a teenager, and is Nigeria’s highest goal scorer in FIFA World Cup history.
