Ronaldo speaks on 2024 Ballon d’Or debate: Says Vinicius Jr. should have won

Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazario has shared his thoughts on the 2024 Ballon d’Or, following Rodri’s win over Vinicius Jr.

Ronaldo believes Vinicius Jr. deserved to win the prestigious award, stating that the decision missed the chance to recognize the Real Madrid star as the best player in the world. While Ronaldo respects Rodri’s achievements, he argued that Vinicius had a more impactful season.

Ronaldo told Marca, “Without taking anything away from Rodri, Vinicius had to win the Ballon d’Or… Vinicius was much more decisive last season.”

Rodri, who plays for Manchester City and led Spain to victory in Euro 2024, won the Ballon d’Or by just 41 votes over Vinicius Jr. Despite this, many in football, including players and fans, believe Vinicius was the true winner.

The situation has sparked further debate, with Rodri acknowledging the rivalry and showing respect for Vinicius.

Vinicius, who had an impressive season with Real Madrid—scoring 24 goals and providing 11 assists—chose not to attend the ceremony after it was clear he wouldn’t win. His decision mirrors past instances where players boycotted awards they felt were unfair.

Ronaldo’s comments have reignited discussions about the fairness of football awards and whether they truly reflect players’ contributions on the field.
