Sadiq Umar criticises fans for unfair treatment of Nigerian players

Super Eagles forward Sadiq Umar has spoken out against the harsh criticism Nigerian players often face from fans while representing their country.

Struggles at Club and National Level

Despite his current poor form for Real Sociedad, where he has yet to score this season, Sadiq was included in the Super Eagles squad for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers by coach Augustine Eguavoen. Sadiq’s struggles have also been evident at the national level, with just one goal since his debut for Nigeria.

Sadiq Opens Up on Fan Pressure

Speaking to OmaSports TV, the 27-year-old admitted that playing for Nigeria can be challenging due to the criticism from supporters.

“If this continues, many players won’t want to play for the Super Eagles,” Sadiq said. “When we play here, it’s not about the money; it’s for the love. But instead of feeling at home, you’re told you don’t belong.

“When we play in Europe, we are loved and supported. But when we come home, our people question why we’re here and even tell us to go back to Europe.”

The Impact of Social Media Criticism

Sadiq also highlighted how negative comments on social media affect players’ mental health.

“Some of my teammates are down after every game because of what fans say online,” he revealed. “Even if you don’t read the comments, your name still comes up. Football today is all about mentality. If you’re not mentally strong, you can’t play.”

Eguavoen Defends His Selection

Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen has defended his decision to call up Sadiq for the AFCON qualifiers, urging patience and support for the player.

Despite the criticism, Sadiq remains hopeful that fans will understand the need to back their players, both on and off the pitch.
