Saka, Solanke, Tomori, others celeberate Super Eagles of Nigeria AFCON semi-final win
Following Nigeria’s hard-fought victory over South Africa in the AFCON 2023 semi-final, several players with Nigerian roots from around the world have joined in congratulating the Super Eagles on their success.
Team captain William Troost-Ekong played a pivotal role in securing the win, breaking the deadlock with a penalty in the second half after a foul on Victor Osimhen. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero in the penalty shootout, saving two spot kicks to propel Nigeria to the final.
The victory sparked an outpouring of emotions from fans, with foreign-based players of Nigerian descent also expressing their support and jubilation.
Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, former Liverpool and Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke, and ex-Chelsea players Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham were among those who cheered on the Super Eagles. They urged the team to go one step further and clinch the title in the final against Ivory Coast.
Even players who represent other national teams, such as Bayern Munich’s Joshua Zirkzee (Netherlands), England U-23 international Noni Madueke, and Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji, showed their support for Nigeria during the match.
The display of solidarity from these diaspora footballers underscores the unity and pride felt within the Nigerian community, both at home and abroad.
