Samson Siasia set for football return after five-year ban

One of Nigeria’s most decorated football players and coach, Samson Siasia is nearing his return to the sport following a five-year ban imposed by FIFA.

The former Super Eagles coach and Olympic hero is set to re-enter the football world on August 16, 2024, just two days after his 57th birthday.

Siasia’s ban, initially handed down for life in 2019 over allegations of match-fixing, was reduced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after he fought to clear his name. Although FIFA found him linked to match-fixing activities through communications with convicted fixer Wilson Perumal, Siasia has consistently maintained his innocence.

Siasia’s trouble with FIFA began in 2010 when he was approached by Perumal, who suggested dubious terms for coaching an Australian A-League team. Despite expressing interest, Siasia’s responses indicated caution and a desire for full terms clarification. Nevertheless, FIFA’s investigation led to a lifetime ban, which was later reduced to five years by CAS due to insufficient evidence for a lifetime ban. Siasia also faced a fine of 50,000 Swiss francs, which was canceled following his successful appeal.

Reflecting on his ordeal, Siasia said, “There’s no proof to that. When you talk about corruption, is it not when money exchanges hands and all that? There was nothing. There’s no video, no evidence of any wrongdoing.”
