Samuel Chukwueze opens up about struggles at AC Milan under Stefano Pioli

Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze has discussed the challenges he faced during his time under former AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli.

Chukwueze joined AC Milan from Villarreal CF in the summer of 2023, ending a successful six-year stint in Spain. However, his move to Serie A did not go as smoothly as hoped.

Despite his impressive performances with Villarreal, Chukwueze struggled to find the same form at Milan. Under Pioli, the Nigerian winger only managed three assists and one goal in 24 appearances.

“I arrived late, at the end of July. It was a bit difficult to convince him; the player in my position was scoring goals. I had a good relationship with Pioli; he’s a fantastic guy and a great coach,” Chukwueze explained.

Chukwueze also faced difficulty securing a regular starting spot, as Pioli often preferred to use Christian Pulisic in his position.

With the arrival of Paulo Fonseca as the new manager at San Siro, Chukwueze has seen a turnaround in his fortunes. He credits Fonseca’s trust and clear communication for his renewed confidence and performance.

“In a previous report, Chukwueze revealed that Fonseca has played a big role in his revival, as the Portuguese tactician has been in constant communication with him. ‘He only told me one thing: “Samuel, I don’t want to see the Chukwueze from last year. I want the one from Villarreal.” And I said, “Okay, no problem.” It’s like I’ve been reborn; I’m a new player,’” Chukwueze told La Gazzetta, as reported by Milan Post.

With the new season approaching, there is optimism that Chukwueze will regain his best form and make a significant impact for AC Milan, reminiscent of his time at Villarreal.
