Scars-story: Victor Boniface latest picture reveals surgery effects

Nigeria’s Victor Boniface is back in training with his Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen – and he’s got the scars to tell story of the surgery he underwent last year.

The Super Eagles star recently shared pictures on social media from his latest training sessions, revealing the shocking scars from surgery he underwent last season.

In a bitter twist of fate for both Leverkusen and the Nigerian national team, the 23-year-old forward had to undergo surgery following a severe muscle tendon injury in January. The injury occurred during a training session in Dubai, just as the Super Eagles were preparing for the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Boniface was forced to leave the Nigerian camp and return to Germany for urgent medical attention.

The muscle tendon tear in his right adductor area caused Boniface to miss four months of the season. Despite the setback, he made a remarkable comeback in time for Leverkusen’s final run-in matches, contributing to their historic Bundesliga title win in his debut campaign. Boniface scored 21 goals and provided nine assists last season.

In his latest training pictures, the scar from his surgery is visible on his knee, a testament to his recovery journey.

In addition to his return to the pitch, Boniface has been offering support to England’s Jude Bellingham. The Real Madrid midfielder, who is only 21, shared his reflections on England’s defeat against Spain in the 2024 European Championship final, thanking former manager Gareth Southgate for “great memories.” The loss made England the first team to lose two straight finals in the competition.

Boniface was quick to offer encouragement to Bellingham, commenting on his post: “Head up, bro.”

As Boniface looks to put his injury woes behind him, he aims to spearhead Leverkusen’s title defence and fire Nigeria to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
