Scholes Blasts Onana After Costly Mistakes in Draw Against Lyon

Former Manchester United star Paul Scholes has criticised goalkeeper Andre Onana after two major errors cost the team in their 2-2 draw against Lyon on Thursday night.

Onana was at fault for both goals. His biggest mistake came in the 95th minute when he failed to hold on to a shot from Georges Mikautadze. The ball spilled out, and Rayan Cherki reacted quickly to score the equaliser for Lyon.

Speaking on TNT Sports after the match, Scholes said:
“I think he was more at fault for the first goal. It was a huge mistake. It was a bit harder to deal with, but he still has to do better.”

Earlier in the game, Onana had already gifted Lyon the lead when he misjudged a cross, letting the ball bounce past him and into the net.

Despite the poor result, Scholes said Manchester United are still in a strong position ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford.
“Lyon played the better football and created more chances. United will be disappointed, but they are still favourites at home. They just have to improve,” he added.

The match came just days after former United midfielder Nemanja Matic labelled Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers” in the club’s history. Onana had earlier claimed that United were a better team than Lyon — a comment that didn’t age well after Thursday’s performance.

Onana, who joined United in 2023 for £47 million, has been under pressure due to several high-profile mistakes. Stats show he has the worst clean sheet percentage and the second-worst save rate among United keepers since 2003–04 (with at least 900 minutes played).

With United struggling in 13th place in the Premier League, Onana’s form continues to be a concern as the team battles to rescue their season.
