Senegal celebrate AFCON win with Trophy Parade in Dakar
The Senegal national football team returned home to Dakar on Sunday following their Africa Cup of Nations title win and took part in a public trophy parade through the city.
Senegal won the AFCON final 1–0 after extra time against Morocco in Rabat. The match saw a late penalty awarded to Morocco, which sparked protests and a temporary halt to play; Senegal’s players left the field before returning.
Brahim Díaz’s penalty attempt was saved by Édouard Mendy. After the final, Moroccan midfielder Ismaël Saibari apologized to Mendy for his involvement in the towel-related incident.
Following their return to Senegal, players and staff rode an open-top bus through central Dakar, displaying the AFCON trophy to supporters gathered along the route.
As part of the celebrations, head coach Pape Thiaw and members of the national team were awarded the rank of Commander of the National Order of the Lion, a national honor conferred by the Senegalese government.
