Sevilla Plans to Sell Iheanacho After Disappointing Performance
Sevilla FC is reportedly planning to sell Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho in the upcoming January 2024 transfer window after his disappointing performance this season.
Iheanacho joined Sevilla last summer after his contract with Leicester City ended. However, his time in Spain has not gone well. He has played nine La Liga games but has failed to score any goals.
According to reports, Sevilla’s Sporting Director, Victor Orta, is looking for a new striker, and selling Iheanacho could help make room for this change.
Iheanacho’s Struggles at Sevilla
Sevilla brought Iheanacho to the club after finishing 14th in La Liga last season, hoping he would help improve the team’s attack. But so far, he has not delivered, scoring only three goals in the Copa del Rey and none in the league.
This lack of goals has hurt Sevilla’s offense, which has only scored 18 goals this season. Neither Iheanacho nor Isaac Romero, who has scored just once, have been able to help enough.
Coach Supports Iheanacho
Despite his poor performance, Sevilla’s coach, Francisco Javier Garcia Pimienta, has supported Iheanacho. Before a match against Real Valladolid, Pimienta said, “Kelechi is a proven player. He just had a difficult game because he came on without warming up. He has to step up because he has the quality to do it at Sevilla.”
Iheanacho played 62 minutes in that game but didn’t score or assist, though his teammate Chidera Ejuke scored the winning goal.
Pimienta also explained that Iheanacho had a tough start because he missed preseason with the team, making it harder for him to adjust to the squad’s style of play.
Iheanacho May Return to England
Recent reports suggest that Iheanacho could return to England, with West Bromwich Albion, a club in the EFL Championship, interested in signing him. However, West Brom would likely need to sell their current star, Nigerian forward Josh Maja, to fund the move.
While moving from La Liga to the Championship may not be ideal, it could give Iheanacho a chance to rebuild his confidence and form.
Before joining Sevilla, Iheanacho was linked to several top Turkish clubs. A loan move in January could give him a fresh start.
