Shakespeare explains how Ndidi stopped Griezmann

Leicester City manager has explained how Nigeria international midfielder Wilfred Ndidi played a key role in restricting Antoine Griezmann’s threat in his sides 1-0 defeat to the Madrid-based club at the Vincente Calderon on Wednesday.

Antoine Griezmann’s controversial penalty in the first half gave the host the victory and bragging right going to the second leg.

The French man was a constant threat to The Foxes all through the first half as his individual brilliance resulted in the controversial penalty but little was seen of him in the 2nd half and Shakespeare revealed after the match that Wilfred Ndidi was the key to his reduced threat in the second half.

“Yeah we changed it,” he said in the post-match interview.

“We had to sacrifice one of the forwards in terms of Shinji Okazaki and we brought in Andy King. We made Wilfred Ndidi drop deeper after changing our formation to 4-1-4-1 and I thought we stopped the threat from Griezmann because in the first half he was getting in between the line and pocket causing us a lot of problems.”

Despite giving up 68% of possession and failing to register a shot on target, Leicester will go into the second leg at the King Power Stadium hoping to repeat their feat against Sevilla another Spanish opposition who they eliminated in the second round.
