Shock as Grimsby Dump Manchester United Out of Carabao Cup

Manchester United suffered a huge shock on Wednesday night after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Grimsby Town in a dramatic penalty shootout.

The tie at Blundell Park ended 2-2 after 90 minutes, before Grimsby sealed a famous 12-11 win on spot-kicks.

United, who were playing in the second round of the competition for the first time since 2014, looked on course for an embarrassing exit when they went 2-0 down at half-time through goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren.

The Reds were poor for most of the game and could easily have conceded more. But they staged a late fightback, with Bryan Mbeumo pulling one back in the 76th minute before Harry Maguire’s header in the 89th minute forced penalties.

The shootout dragged on with both sides scoring confidently, but it was eventually settled when Mbeumo struck the crossbar with his second effort, handing Grimsby a famous victory and sparking wild celebrations from the home fans.

United are still without a win this season, and pressure is already mounting on head coach Ruben Amorim ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Burnley at Old Trafford.
