Should Austin Eguavoen be appointed permanent Super Eagles coach? Osaze Odemwingie delivers judgement
Former Nigerian international Osaze Odemwingie has expressed support for Augustine Eguavoen to be appointed as the permanent head coach of the Super Eagles. Odewingie praised Eguavoen’s performance during his interim role, urging the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to retain him for the long term.
Eguavoen, who was named caretaker manager in September after Finidi George’s resignation and the breakdown of negotiations with Bruno Labbadia, has led Nigeria to two wins and one draw in three 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
In an interview with Brila FM, Odemwingie commended Eguavoen’s dedication and experience, noting their personal history. “Eguavoen was the general manager when I signed my first professional contract with Bendel Insurance. He’s a committed coach with passion. Football is his life,” Odemwingie said.
He believes that Eguavoen’s reliability and passion make him an ideal candidate for the job. “He’s always available, dependable, and ready to serve. With 7 points from 3 games, he’s showing the right qualities,” Odemwingie added.
The former West Bromwich player also emphasised the importance of Eguavoen’s willingness to take the job permanently. “If he wants the role and aligns with the NFF’s vision, then it would make sense to appoint him permanently.”
Odemwingie, who earned over 60 caps for Nigeria and competed in two World Cups and four AFCON tournaments, concluded by wishing Eguavoen success in his role.
