Simeone Praises Ademola Lookman After Historic Madrid Derby Goal

Super Eagles attacker Ademola Lookman caught the eye of Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone after his debut goal in Sunday’s Madrid derby.
The 28-year-old made history by becoming the first Atletico player in years to score on his Madrid derby debut. Lookman opened the scoring in the first half at the iconic Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, giving Los Colchoneros an early lead against arch-rivals Real Madrid.
Despite his bright start, Lookman was substituted in the 57th minute, shortly after Real Madrid turned the game around with two quick goals to lead 2-1. Atletico fought back, but the match ended 3-2 in favour of Los Blancos, leaving Simeone’s side in fourth place, 16 points behind leaders Barcelona.
Lookman’s early withdrawal raised some eyebrows, as he had impressed with his attacking runs and positive presence on the ball throughout his time on the pitch.
After the game, Simeone praised the Nigerian star’s contribution. The Argentine tactician, who has been working to improve Lookman’s defensive output, highlighted the forward’s dedication and growth.
“Ademola Lookman is improving, working very well, and giving us different things,” Simeone said. “We’re helping him grow defensively because he has that work ethic. He’s a player with a big heart and a desire to learn. Hopefully, he keeps giving us important things like he did today.”
Next Stop: Super Eagles Duty
With the derby behind him, Lookman will now turn his attention to international duty. He has been named in Eric Chelle’s 23-man squad for Nigeria’s upcoming friendlies against Iran and Jordan, taking on a key role in the attack in the absence of the injured Victor Osimhen.
This will be Lookman’s first opportunity to represent the Super Eagles since joining Atletico Madrid, and he will be hoping to bring the lessons learned under Simeone into the national team camp.
