Sixers star Joel Embiid named 2022-23 NBA MVP

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has been named the Kia MVP for the 2022-23 NBA season after an impressive season from the Cameroon-born player. He becomes the first Sixer since Allen Iverson to be named as the league’s MVP.

Having finished as runner-up behind Nikola Jokic in each of the last two seasons, Embiid finally picked up the Michael Jordan Trophy as the MVP this season. The naturalised Frenchman has helped the Sixers reach the Conference semifinals, where they lead 1-0 against the Boston Celtics.

Embiid finished the regular season with 33.1 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game, making him the first player to average 33 points and 10 rebounds per game since the merger. He was the NBA’s scoring champion this season and led the league in 35-point games.

Joel Embiid won his first MVP award after beating Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo, both of whom have won it twice each, to the award. The six-time All-Star will be hoping to add a first ring to his collection after his personal successes this season.
