Sorana Cirstea wins home Title in Cluj-Napoca
Sorana Cirstea claimed the Transylvania Open title in Cluj-Napoca with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Emma Raducanu, securing her fourth career WTA singles trophy.
The 35-year-old Romanian, who has announced plans to retire at the end of 2026, completed a dominant week without dropping a set, sealing the final in 63 minutes on centre court.
Speaking before addressing the crowd, Cirstea paid tribute to Simona Halep, who presented the trophy, and to the home supporters.
“First of all, I want to thank Simona for this prize. It’s a dream come true to receive this cup from her,” Cirstea said.“I’ll start with the crowd. You gave me the most beautiful week of my life. Your support gave me wings.”
She added, “I’ve been a professional player for 20 years, but I’ve never experienced a week like this. These memories will stay with me for the rest of my life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Cirstea also acknowledged Raducanu’s run to the final. “Emma, congratulations on a wonderful week. We are very happy to have you here in Cluj and I hope you come back and win this trophy one day.”
Raducanu, who was playing her first final since her 2021 US Open triumph, also addressed the crowd during the ceremony.
“I want to say thank you to all the ball kids, umpires and sponsors who made this tournament possible,” Raducanu said.“You really made me feel at home this week. Sorry I couldn’t bring my best today, but congratulations to Sorana. You’ve had an incredible week.”
Reflecting on her return to a final, Raducanu added: “It’s been a while since I’ve given one of these speeches. It means a lot, and I’m really happy it happened here in Cluj.”
