South Africa get first-ever Women’s World Cup point Vs Argentina
South Africa picked their first ever point at a FIFA Women’s World Cup following a 2-2 draw vs Argentina in their second group game of the 2023 edition.
A point which could have been three if the Bayana Bayana of South Africa had held on to a 2-0 lead that lasted until the 74th minute of the match on Friday July 28.
Both teams came into the game in search of maximum points following their opening game defeats. South Africa fell 1-2 to Sweden who required a late-winner same circumstances befell Argentina who lost 0-1 to Italy.
South Africa took a first half lead courtesy of Linda Motlhalo from a Kgatlana assist in the 30th minute of the game Vs Argentina.
In the 66th minute, Kgatlana then added a second to set South Africa on course for their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup win until a fight-back by the South Americans inside the final quarter of the match.
Sophia Braun gave the Argentina ladies hope of a comeback when her long range effort graced the South African net for 2-1 in the 74th minute.
Five minutes later, Argentina drew level courtesy of a Romina Nunez header to settle a 2-2 draw and leave the two teams in third and fourth place in group G at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
African champions South Africa still have a chance of progressing from the group, that is if they can defeat Italy in their final group game on Wednesday August 2.
Meanwhile, Italy and Sweden will play their second group game on Saturday, the result of that match will determine the size of work before the Desire Ellis tutored Bayana Bayana in their last game.
Buoyed by their first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup point, South Africa will hope to finally pluck a win vs Italy on Wednesday to possibly book an historic first knockout round spot.
