Spain crushes Georgia 4-1 to secure Euro 2024 quarter-final spot
Spain secured their place in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals with an impressive 4-1 victory over Georgia, setting their sights firmly on the tournament trophy.
Under the guidance of Luis de la Fuente, Spain topped their group with nine points, setting up a clash with Georgia in the round of 16.
Despite Georgia taking an early lead, La Furia Roja showcased their dominance and quality throughout the match.
In a surprising turn of events, Georgia opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Right-back Otar Kakabadze delivered a superb low cross, which pressured Robin Le Normand into an own goal past Unai Simon. However, Spain quickly regained their composure and control of the game.
Spain equalized in the 39th minute when Rodri’s low left-footed shot from just outside the box found the back of the net, bringing the teams level as they headed into halftime.
The second half saw Spain take the lead. Giorgi Mamardashvili made a fine save from a free kick, but Spain maintained their pressure. Lamine Yamal’s cross found Fabian Ruiz, who nodded the ball past Mamardashvili to make it 2-1.
Spain continued to press and added a third goal in the 75th minute. Fabian Ruiz set up Nico Williams, who sprinted past Giorgi Gvelesiani and finished emphatically into the roof of the net, extinguishing any hopes of a Georgian comeback.
The final blow came in the 83rd minute when Dani Olmo found space on the edge of the box and calmly placed his shot into the bottom left corner, sealing the victory for Spain.
Luis de la Fuente’s men will now face hosts Germany in the quarter-finals, with their performance against Georgia showcasing their potential to go all the way in Euro 2024.
