Although some European clubs are struggling financially, most Premier League clubs have already spent a lot of cash during the 2022 summer transfer windows, with clubs like Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Leeds joining the club of big spenders to build an indestructible team.
Matchplug understands that billions of pounds and euros have exchanged hands between club managers in the 2022 summer transfers, bringing in some of the biggest deals in history.
The financial uncertainty faced by clubs due to Covid-19 and the long-term fallout it brought, didn’t in any way affect the spending by clubs in this group, with the Premier League splurging over €1.1 billion in transfer fees.
So, which Premier League clubs have paid the most in fees this summer to rack up such an amount?
Summer Transfer Window 2022: Which Premier League Club Spent The Most On Players?
Arsenal spent a total of £117.2 million (€99m) during the summer transfers, giving their manager Mikel Arteta the ammo he needed to fight his way to the top four again.
The club has brought in Matt Turner for £5.7m (€6.6m) from New England, Marquinhos for £3m (€3.5m), Fabio Vieira for £31.5m (€36.6m), Gabriel Jesus, £45m (€52m), and Oleksandr Zinchenko £32 million.
Liverpool splurged £95.7 million (€110.8m) on summer transfers this year, Jurgen Klopp’s move to widen the one-point gap that separated them from Manchester City last year and win the Premier League title.
In a club-record signing, Liverpool signed Darwin Nunez from Benfica for £86m, winning him from Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Manchester United. Fabio Carvalho also joined the club for £5.3m (€6.1m), followed by Calvin Ramsay for £4.4m (€5m).
Manchester City spent £93.3 million (€110.4m) on summer transfers, Pep Guardiola went to the market to strengthen his squad and hopefully defend their Premier League crown. Amongst their signings are Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, and Stefan Ortega the goalkeeper.
Haaland was bought for a £51.3m (€60m) fee, expected to increase to £85.5m (€100m) after the agent’s fee, sign-on bonus, and other add-ons. Kalvin Philips on the other hand was purchased for £42m, plus £3m worth of possible add-ons.
Then Stefan Ortega who was signed but hasn’t been bought yet cause won’t be making any appearances this season.
Leeds United isn’t wasting any time this summer as they have already spent £35million on two new player signings. Victor Orta is asking for a third deal, after securing Kristensen and Aaronson.
The club signed Rasmus Kristensen for £10m and Brendan Aaronson for £25m, both players from Red Bull Salzburg. Orta is settling on getting Lisbon forward Gonzalo Plata as their new winger for £8.5m, a fee which Leeds is looking to meet for its third summer signing.
Tottenham got £150 million from ENIC ahead of the transfer window and having spent that money on 5 players, Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici still have more to spend. The five players signed were Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic, Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, and Clement Lenglet who is on a season-long loan.
Spurs however are looking to make a sixth signing this season. Midfielder Christian Eriksen was previously in their sights before he moved to Manchester United. But this didn’t stop Conte from wanting to further boost his club.
