Sports Minister commends Team Nigeria’s outstanding performances at African Games

The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has showered praise on Nigerian athletes for their exceptional achievements at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana.

After an impressive Day 3 of athletics, Nigeria secured an additional four gold medals and shattered records, drawing admiration from sports enthusiasts nationwide.

Senator Enoh hailed the athletes for their remarkable feats, emphasizing the immense pride they bring to the nation. “I salute our gallant sportsmen and women who have showcased extraordinary performances in Accra,” stated Enoh. “From Okezie’s historic breakthrough in the 400m to our sprinters’ outstanding displays in the finals, and the dominance of our boxers, these moments are truly invaluable for our country.”

The highlight of Nigeria’s stellar run at the games was the triumphant performances in the men’s and women’s 4 x 100m relay events. The men’s team, in particular, celebrated a significant victory, overturning a defeat to Ghana 21 years ago by clinching gold with an impressive time of 38.41 seconds. Similarly, the women’s team secured gold with a stellar performance clocking 43.05 seconds, leaving Liberia and Ghana to settle for silver and bronze, respectively.

Chidi Okezie’s historic win in the men’s 400m was another standout moment for Nigerian athletics. Okezie’s achievement marked a significant milestone as he became the first Nigerian man to claim the title since Innocent Egbunike in 1987, breaking a longstanding 37-year record. Additionally, world record holder Tobi Amusan showcased her prowess in the women’s 100m hurdles, further solidifying her status as a premier athlete.

In boxing, Team Nigeria’s exceptional prowess was on full display as they clinched victories in all five semifinal bouts. Zainab Adeshina, Joy Ojo, Mbata Patricia, Omole Dolapo, and Olaore Adams emerged triumphant, securing their spots in the final of their respective events.

Senator Enoh expressed immense pride in the athletes’ performances and urged them to maintain unwavering focus in the remaining events. As Nigeria continues to shine across various sports, the nation stands united in celebrating the remarkable achievements of its sporting heroes.

“Our athletes have demonstrated remarkable talent and resilience at the African Games,” remarked Enoh. “Their achievements embody the spirit of excellence that defines Nigerian sports. I commend their dedication and call on them to stay focused as they pursue further success,” he concluded.
