St. Danny the decider as Saints stun champions Liverpool

Former Liverpool striker, Danny Ings scored the only goal of the game as Southampton picked up a well-deserved 3 points against the defending champions, Liverpool at St. Mary’s Stadium in their Matchday 17 encounter.

Liverpool’s injury problems caused manager Jurgen Klopp to name two midfielders, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho as his central defenders for the game. Liverpool were well below par, with their first shot on target coming in the 75th minute of the game. Ings converted after a well-worked freekick routine from midfielder James Ward-Prowse allowed him to hook the ball over the head of the Liverpool goalkeeper in the 2nd minute for his 50th career Premier League goal, and his 7th of the season.

The Englishman’s goal gave Southampton their first win in 5 games, propelling them to 6th place on the Premier League table with 29 points.Liverpool however remain top of the league, ahead of Manchester United on goal difference, although United have played one less game.
