Stay Strong LA: Gauff, Pegula, and Swiatek Stand with Wildfire Victims

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, both top American tennis players, used their Australian Open victories to send heartfelt messages to Los Angeles, where devastating wildfires have caused destruction and loss.

After her first-round win against Sofia Kenin, Gauff wrote, “Stay strong LA, thank you, firefighters,” on a camera lens, showing solidarity with the city and its brave firefighters. The third-best player is a favorite for the Australian Open title and started her campaign with a solid 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Jessica Pegula, the tournament’s seventh seed, followed suit after her 6-3, 6-0 win over Australian wildcard Maya Joint. Pegula wrote “LA” and added a heart symbol, expressing love and concern for those affected.

Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek also joined in, writing, “Sending my love to Malibu and LA,” after her 6-3, 6-4 win over Katarina Siniakova. The world No. 2 showed global support for the affected region.

The wildfires, which started on January 7, have been described as the worst in LA’s history. Authorities have confirmed 24 fatalities, with 16 people still missing. Firefighters are working tirelessly to contain the blaze.

Donna Vekic, coached by American legend Pam Shriver, also sent a message of support after her victory. Shriver stayed in LA to assist her family during this crisis.

Gauff and fellow American Taylor Fritz have previously donated to charities helping wildfire victims, showing that their contributions go beyond words. Gauff said, “We want LA to know we care and are with them.”

These athletes’ actions highlight how the tennis world can come together in times of crisis, offering hope and support to those in need.
