Sunderland hold Man City as Xhaka leads the Way
Sunderland picked up a big point on New Year’s Day after holding Manchester City to a 0-0 draw at the Stadium of Light.
The newly promoted side were under pressure for long periods but stayed organised and disciplined at the back. City had chances through Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, but they could not find a way through.
Granit Xhaka was one of Sunderland’s standout players. The former Arsenal captain controlled the midfield, broke up play, and helped keep City from settling into their usual rhythm. His performance drew loud support from the home crowd.
The result ended Manchester City’s six-game winning streak and extended Sunderland’s strong home form, as they remain unbeaten at the Stadium of Light in recent matches.
After the game, Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris praised his team’s effort and focus, saying they showed character against one of the best teams in the league.
For Sunderland, the draw will feel like a win. For City, it was a frustrating afternoon where chances came but goals did not.
