Super Eagles Apologise After 2-1 Loss to Rwanda in AFCON Qualifier
Nigeria ended their AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign on a disappointing note with a 2-1 home defeat to Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium. The result marked a frustrating conclusion for the Super Eagles, who had already secured qualification for the tournament in Morocco.
The game remained goalless in the first half until Samuel Chukwueze broke the deadlock in the 59th minute. The winger received a pass from Frank Onyeka, skillfully dribbled past three defenders, and struck the ball past Rwanda’s goalkeeper, Fiacre Ntwari.
However, the lead was short-lived. Substitute Marie Gueulette equalised with a header from a free kick in the 72nd minute. Just three minutes later, Rwanda struck again, capitalising on defensive lapses to secure a historic win.
Nigerian fans took to social media to express their frustration, with many pointing fingers at goalkeeper Maduka Okoye for the defeat.
Super Eagles’ Message to Nigerians
In response to the loss, the Super Eagles shared a heartfelt apology and a message of hope on their social media platforms:
“We are disappointed to have ended our great run in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers with a home loss.

Despite their victory, Rwanda failed to qualify for the AFCON as Benin Republic and Libya played out a 0-0 draw in North Africa, securing their own spots.
The Super Eagles now turn their focus to preparations for the tournament in Morocco, where they aim to bounce back and deliver a stronger performance.
