Super Eagles B-team walloped 4-0 by Mexico in friendly
Super Eagles fail to impress in outing at LA Coliseum
Nigeria’s Super Eagles B-side was convincingly beaten 4-0 by Mexico as Central American side continues to prepare for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. In the friendly held in the United States of America at LA Coliseum, the Super Eagles failed to match up to their more illustrious opponents.
To face an El Tri side ranked 11th in the world, the Super Eagles starting XI consisted of ten home-based pros, with Montreal Impact youngster Ibrahim Sunusi the only player based outside the shores of the country. The team was captained by exciting Enyimba winger Anayo Iwuala. The match started in the worst possible way for the Super Eagles as Mexican striker Rogelio Funes Mori opened the scoring inside the opening two minutes. The game began to run away from the Super Eagles when Atletico Madrid midfielder Hector Herrera scored in the fourth minute to make it 2-0 to the Mexicans. Herrera scored again in the 52nd minute to put Mexico 3-0 up before Jonathan Dos Santos added a fourth for El Tri after 78 minutes.
The Super Eagles failed to register a single shot on target and had only 30% of the ball in what was a disappointing performance from the home-based boys. The match will have no impact on the FIFA rankings of both nations, as was announced before a ball was kicked. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was impressive for the Super Eagles as he made some saves which helped prevent a cricket scoreline. The Super Eagles will now return to help their respective NPFL clubs as the season enters its final stretch.
