Super Eagles camp to open in Uyo on September 8 for AFCON qualifiers
The Super Eagles camp will be opened in Uyo on Monday, September 4 ahead of the AFCON qualifiers vs Sao Tome and Principe.
Nigeria will play it’s last 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying group match on Sunday, September 10 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
A dead rubber, per the qualification status from the group with Nigeria and Guinea Bissau already confirmed as the two qualified teams from the group.
Nigeria will look to end the qualifying series on a winning note to top the group.
The first leg ended 0-10 in favour of the Super Eagles of Nigeria on matchday two of the qualifying series.
Sao Tome and Principe occupy bottom spot in a group that also houses Sierra Leone who the Super Eagles defeated 2-3 in Lome on matchday five to confirm qualification for the AFCON.
With uncertainty over the coaching crew of the Super Eagles following the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract, the list of players to prosecute the game is yet to be announced.
According to multiple sources, the Nigeria Football Federation will name an interim coach to prosecute the game vs Sao Tome and Principe, Technical Director Austin Eguavoen and current assistants Salisu Yusuf/Finidi George named as favourites for the role .
This will mark the Super Eagles return to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo after years away from the facility that famously hosted all 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification games.
Ivory Coast will host the 2023 AFCON tournament in January next year after it was rescheduled by the Confederation of African Football over weather related concerns .
