Super Eagles Captain William Ekong Confident Ahead of Zimbabwe Clash
Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has assured fans that the team is fully focused on securing a crucial win against Zimbabwe in their 2026 World Cup qualifier.
Nigeria will face the Warriors of Zimbabwe on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. A victory would take the Super Eagles to nine points and strengthen their chances of qualifying for the World Cup.
Speaking on Monday, Ekong stressed that the team aims to dominate the game, just as they did in their 2-0 win against Rwanda in Kigali last Friday.
“We are looking forward to a win. The three points are very important to us. At this stage, we cannot afford to drop any more points,” Ekong said. “Our aim is to take it one match at a time, win as many games as possible, and ensure we qualify for the World Cup.”
Nigeria had struggled earlier in the qualifiers, failing to win any of their first four matches and dropping to fifth place in Group C. However, Friday’s win over Rwanda revived their chances, pushing them up to fourth place with six points.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe, currently bottom of the group with three points, will be desperate to improve their standings when they take on Nigeria. The Warriors’ 45-man delegation, led by Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Vice President Kennedy Ndebele, arrived in Uyo on Friday, just an hour after the Super Eagles returned from Kigali.
Both teams have been preparing intensively for the match. The Warriors trained at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Sunday morning, while the Super Eagles held their session later in the evening. The Nigerian team’s training was attended by top officials, including NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, Presidential Adviser Anthony Adeboye, and Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Paul Bassey.
With strong home support and renewed confidence, the Super Eagles will aim to secure all three points and keep their World Cup dreams alive.
