Super Eagles coaching job: Janne Anderson confirms talks with NFF

Experienced Swedish coach Janne Andersson has confirmed that he is in talks with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) about the vacant Super Eagles coaching job, but emphasiSed that nothing has been finalized yet.

The 61-year-old Andersson is currently available after stepping down as Sweden’s coach in November 2023 following their failure to qualify for the 2024 European Championship.

After Nigeria’s disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin, Super Eagles coach Finidi George resigned, leaving the team without a permanent coach.

In response to this, the NFF’s Executive Committee decided to hire a foreign Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and the remaining 2026 World Cup qualifying matches.

Despite reports linking Andersson to the Super Eagles role, the NFF clarified earlier this week that no appointment has been made.

Speaking about the situation, Andersson told Swedish newspaper Expressen: “It’s a huge footballing nation. I can confirm that I have had a dialogue with the Nigeria Football Federation.

“It’s a huge footballing nation, so I’m extremely flattered to be in the running to be their next national team coach.

“Dialogue is ongoing, and I don’t really want to say more than that. I have been in this industry for so long and know that things can happen in different ways. So we’ll see what happens in the future.”

Janne Andersson, who previously managed Swedish clubs Halmstads BK, Örgryte IS, and IFK Norrköping, has never coached a foreign team before.
