Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem joins FC Cincinnati from Boavista
Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has completed his transfer from Portuguese club Boavista to Major League Soccer side FC Cincinnati, where he will join fellow Nigerian, Obinna Nwobodo.
This move was confirmed by MLS reporter Tom Bogert and further corroborated by FC Cincinnati’s official reporter, Pat Brennan.
Awaziem, who previously played for FC Porto, was a crucial part of Boavista’s defense during the 2023-24 Liga Portugal season. His performances, which included one assist in 24 appearances, drew significant interest from FC Cincinnati, who were keen to strengthen their defensive options.
Awaziem’s transfer to FC Cincinnati reunites him with compatriot Obinna Nwobodo. Nwobodo, a key player for the Orange and Blue, has a contract with the club that runs until 2025. This Nigerian duo is expected to bring a strong defensive and midfield presence to the team.
This transfer marks the end of Awaziem’s tenure at Boavista, where he played alongside fellow Nigerians Ibrahim Alhassan and Bruno Onyemeachi. Awaziem has been in Portugal since 2014, and his departure leaves a gap that Boavista recently filled by signing Nigerian midfielder Alhassan from Belgian club Beerschot VA on a two-year contract.
With Awaziem’s arrival, FC Cincinnati aims to bolster their defensive lineup amidst injury challenges. His experience in European leagues and international play with Nigeria’s national team is expected to be a significant asset for the club.
This transfer not only enhances FC Cincinnati’s defensive capabilities but also highlights the growing presence of Nigerian talent in Major League Soccer, fostering a promising future for Nigerian players abroad.
