Super Eagles goalie Okoye named Sparta Rotterdam Player of the Year
Okoye also named in Eredivisie team of the season
Super Eagles and Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has capped off a wonderful first season with the Eredivisie side by being voted as the club’s Player of the Year by the fans of the Dutch side.
Okoye, 21, joined Sparta from his hometown club, Fortuna Dusseldorf II in July 2020, making a huge step up from the lower dregs of German football to the Dutch first division after he was noticed by the Super Eagles scouts and handed his Super Eagles debut. He kept 10 clean sheets in 28 matches for Sparta Rotterdam, helping them finish 8th in the league in his debut campaign and earning a place in the Eredivisie team of the year.
Okoye has since been linked with a move to Dutch giants Ajax following the ban imposed on Andre Onana by FIFA and Arsenal’s interest in taking Onana to the Emirates Stadium, as well as the advancement in age of Onana’s backup, Marten Stekelenburg. A move to the Johan Cruyff Arena would represent a meteoric rise for the youngster who has a huge future ahead of him.
