Super Eagles have the potential to win the World Cup – CAF President
Gives advice on how the goal can be achieved
CAF President, Patrice Motsepe has said the Super Eagles of Nigeria can win the FIFA World Cup, reports SportsRation.
Patrice Motsepe said Nigeria’s football history, talent, and pedigree can help Nigeria meet and surpass Morocco’s mark at the 2022 World Cup.
Morocco ended the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the 4th position – the highest by any African nation at the tournament, but Patrice Motsepe is counting on Nigeria to go two steps further.
“I am absolutely confident [because of] the talent, God-given skills, and history of Nigerian football.
“Nigeria is one of those countries that have the potential – not just to go to the semi-final, not just to go to the final, but to win the World Cup,” he told Channels Television.
For Nigeria to win the World Cup they must play in it and having missed out on the just concluded edition in Qatar, Moetse believes the Super Eagles will make Africa proud come 2026.
The South African businessman said the Nigeria Football Federation needs to focus on youth football, football facilities, and more to achieve the goal.
“However, they have to focus on youth football development, football facilities for boys and girls, amateur football, and football development at the club level.
“They have to train coaches and train the trainers. Nigeria have to develop referees and very importantly, to make sure that we [Caf] work together with the football federation in Nigeria so that they can continue the leadership that they have provided for many years.
“We are confident that Nigerian football will continue to be not just amongst the best in Africa but in the world. I know Nigeria will make us proud as it has on so many occasions in the past. Our plan is to see Nigeria in the next World Cup.”
The 2026 edition will see the number of participating teams increase from 32 to 48 with African slots increased from 5 to 9.
