Super Eagles Interim Manager Austin Eguavoen sets objective for World Cup qualifier matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda
Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, has downplayed the notion of revenge against Benin Republic ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, insisting that the team’s sole objective is to secure maximum points in both matches.
Eguavoen, who took over the reins following a period of instability in the Super Eagles’ management, dismissed talks of a grudge match after Nigeria’s surprising 2-1 loss to Benin Republic, managed by former Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr, back in June. That defeat left a mark on the team and its supporters, but Eguavoen remains focused on the future.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the clash, Eguavoen made it clear that the team’s focus was not on settling old scores, but rather on achieving qualification for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“Our objective is clear: to collect six points from both matches. The players are well aware of this, and they’re fully committed. Qualifiers are never easy, and every team wants to be at the AFCON finals, but we’ve spoken to the squad, and we’re all on the same page,” Eguavoen said.
He further emphasized, “No one is talking about revenge. Our sole focus is on getting three points against Benin Republic on Saturday and then another three points in Kigali on Tuesday. These victories will set us on the right path towards qualification.”
The upcoming match in Uyo on September 7th has been billed as a highly anticipated encounter, given the previous result in Abidjan, where Benin Republic claimed a shock victory. The Super Eagles are keen to secure their spot in next year’s AFCON, but Eguavoen has made it clear that their approach is about achieving success rather than dwelling on past defeats.
Three days after their match against Benin Republic, the Super Eagles will travel to Kigali to face Rwanda, with the aim of securing another crucial victory in their World Cup qualifying campaign.
Eguavoen’s task is simple yet challenging: to collect six points from the two fixtures and restore confidence in the team as they continue their journey toward continental success.
