Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali joins Portuguese outfit

Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has signed a deal to join Portuguese outfit GD Chaves on a three-year deal from Spanish side Ponferradina.

Nwakali joined Spanish second division side SD Ponferradina for free in 2022 following a contract dispute with Huesca, and made 36 appearances for the Segunda division side in the 2022-23 season, scoring one goal and contributing four assists. The midfielder could not help his side beat the drop to the third division despite his efforts.

The Nigeria international makes his return to Portugal after playing for FC Porto’s B-team at the start of his career. The 25-year-old joins a GD Chaves side that finished seventh in the 2022-23 season of the Portuguese league. He will join for a nominal fee and be announced as a new player for the side in due course.
