Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika faces early season setback with Club Brugge loss
Nigerian midfielder for Club Brugge, Raphael Onyedika experienced an early season disappointment following his team’s defeat to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise (Union SG) in the Belgian Super Cup.
This loss came after Onyedika’s contribution to Club Brugge’s Belgian Pro League title win last season.
Union SG, who ended their previous season on a high by winning the Belgian Cup for the first time in 110 years, defeated Club Brugge 2-1 at the Jan Breydelstadion in Brugge. This victory marked Union SG’s first appearance and win in the Super Cup.
Onyedika began the match on the bench and entered the game in the 56th minute with Club Brugge already trailing due to goals from Cameron Puertas and Fedde Leysen. Despite a late goal from Christos Tzolis, Club Brugge could not secure a comeback.
Looking ahead, Onyedika and his team will kick off their 2024/25 league campaign with a home match against Mechelen on Friday, July 26.
Since joining Club Brugge from FC Midtjylland in 2022 for nearly €10 million, Onyedika has made 90 appearances, scoring four goals and providing two assists. Earlier this year, he also came close to winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria, reaching the final of the tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.
