Super Eagles secure late win against Libya in AFCON 2025 qualifier

The Super Eagles of Nigeria earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Libya in their AFCON 2025 qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, thanks to a late goal from substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

In a match where Augustine Eguavoen’s side dominated possession and created multiple chances, it took until the final moments for the breakthrough to come. Nigeria’s aggressive start saw Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface lead the attack in the absence of injured star striker Victor Osimhen.

Despite their dominance, the Super Eagles were unable to score in the first half. Fulham’s Alex Iwobi came close early on with a shot saved at the near post by Libya’s goalkeeper, Murad Al-Wuheeshi, who put in a man-of-the-match performance. Moments later, Frank Onyeka’s long-range effort forced another fine save, with William Troost-Ekong unable to capitalize on the rebound.

Libya’s defence held firm throughout the first half, frustrating the Super Eagles despite constant pressure.

In the second half, Nigeria continued to push for a goal. Eguavoen brought on Samuel Chukwueze at halftime for Onyeka to add more attacking firepower, but the Villarreal winger missed a great opportunity in the 70th minute, with Al-Wuheeshi once again denying Nigeria.

Boniface, who had struggled to find the back of the net, was replaced by Taiwo Awoniyi with 20 minutes remaining. The Super Eagles thought they had finally taken the lead when Ademola Lookman scored a superb goal, but it was ruled out for offside.

With just 10 minutes remaining, substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru became the hero, calmly finishing from a Moses Simon assist to give Nigeria the much-needed win and send the Uyo crowd into celebration.

The victory strengthens Nigeria’s position in the group as they aim for a place in the 2025 AFCON tournament.
