Super Eagles shocked by Rwanda in Uyo
in the tournament, the defeat exposed weaknesses in the team.
Poor Start for Nigeria
The Super Eagles struggled in the first half, showing a lack of urgency. Although Moses Simon set up Kelechi Iheanacho with a good chance before halftime, the Rwandan goalkeeper made a fine save to keep the game goalless.
Coach Augustine Eguavoen made eight changes to the squad, giving players like Alhassan Yusuf, Raphael Onyedika, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Victor Boniface starting roles. However, the new lineup failed to make an impact.
Second Half Drama
Eguavoen made substitutions early in the second half, bringing on Samuel Chukwueze and Frank Onyeka. Chukwueze made an immediate impact, scoring a brilliant solo goal in the 59th minute after dribbling past three defenders.
But Rwanda fought back. A free kick in the 72nd minute brought the visitors level, and just three minutes later, a deflected shot gave them the lead.
What’s Next for the Super Eagles?
The loss raises questions about Nigeria’s preparedness for future challenges. While their qualification for AFCON 2025 is secure, the performance against Rwanda serves as a reminder that improvement is needed.
The team must address their weaknesses and build a stronger, more cohesive unit as they prepare for a busy 2025.
