Japan’s women’s national football team continued their impressive form with a commanding 4-0 victory over Ghana’s Black Queens in a friendly match played in Kanazawa on Saturday. This win marks Japan’s third consecutive friendly victory, following their 2-0 and 4-1 wins over New Zealand in May and June, respectively.
Despite Ghana being reduced to ten players after a red card in the 23rd minute, they managed to keep Japan at bay in the first half. However, Japan’s relentless offense broke through in the second half. Mina Tanaka opened the scoring in the 51st minute, followed by Maika Hamano in the 65th minute, Aoba Fujino in the 67th minute, and Riko Ueki in the 80th minute to secure a decisive victory.
The friendly against Ghana served as crucial preparation for Japan ahead of their group stage matches at the Paris Olympics. Japan will face a challenging group that includes Nigeria’s Super Falcons, Brazil, and Spain.
Japan will kick off their Olympic campaign against the reigning Women’s World Cup champions, Spain, on July 25th. They will then face Brazil on July 28th before concluding the group stage against Nigeria’s Super Falcons on July 31st.
The upcoming match against Nigeria will be the second time Japan and Nigeria meet in the Olympic women’s football tournament. The first encounter was a 1-0 victory for Nigeria in the group stage at the 2004 Athens Games. Despite this, Japan has won all three of their most recent meetings against Nigeria in friendlies, each with an identical 2-0 scoreline.
Japan’s dominant performance against Ghana and their strong form in recent friendlies make them a formidable opponent in the upcoming Olympics. As they prepare for their clash with the Super Falcons, Japan will be aiming to maintain their winning streak and secure a strong start to their Olympic campaign.
On the other hand, the Super Falcons, having demonstrated their capabilities in previous tournaments, will be eager to challenge Japan and make their mark in the group stage.
The Super Falcons are currently camped in Sevilla, Spain in preparation for the 2024 Olympic games. The Super Falcons will fly into France on Thursday, July 18 – exactly a week to their opening match against illustrious opponents Brazil.
The match on July 31st promises to be an exciting and crucial encounter for both teams as they vie for Olympic glory.
