Super Falcons eyeing opportunity following FIFA’s point deduction for Canada
The Super Falcons of Nigeria are poised to capitalize on a significant opportunity created by FIFA’s recent decision to deduct six points from Canada for espionage.
Nigeria’s coach has noted that this point deduction effectively eliminates any chance for a third-placed team from Group A to advance. The group, which includes Colombia, France, Canada, and New Zealand, now faces a dramatic shift in the standings.
Currently, Canada, despite having won two matches, is positioned third in Group A with no points due to the deduction. Should the point penalty and the resulting six-goal deficit be enforced, Canada could be effectively eliminated from contention as one of the best third-placed teams.
For Nigeria to advance, they need to secure a win against Japan in their final group match on Wednesday. Coach Waldrum acknowledges that even if Nigeria had drawn their previous game against Spain, a positive result against Japan is crucial.
The Super Falcons’ path to the quarter-finals could be further facilitated if Spain also defeats Brazil, allowing Nigeria to benefit from the recalculated standings.
