Super Falcons: NFF name Interim replacement for Randy Waldrum
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has swiftly named Coach Justin Madugu as the interim head coach of the Super Falcons following the sudden resignation of former head coach Randy Waldrum.
This announcement was made by the NFF’s Executive Committee, which has tasked Madugu with leading the senior women’s national team on a temporary basis, ensuring continuity and stability as the team navigates this transitional phase.
Waldrum, who had been in charge of the Super Falcons since 2020, stepped down earlier this month, citing personal reasons, including health concerns regarding his wife. His resignation came as a surprise, particularly after he had expressed his commitment to the team just weeks prior.
The American coach’s departure followed a challenging period for the Super Falcons, which included a disappointing exit in the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifiers. Despite these struggles, Waldrum had publicly voiced his love for the team and his desire to take them to greater heights.
Madugu’s appointment comes at a crucial time as the Super Falcons prepare for their next major competition, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to take place in Morocco in the summer of 2024. The NFF has emphasized that Madugu’s role is temporary, with a thorough search for a permanent head coach already underway.
The NFF’s quick decision to appoint an interim coach highlights its commitment to ensuring the Super Falcons remain competitive as they look forward to upcoming international tournaments. The federation is expected to conduct a detailed search for a substantive head coach, aiming to find a leader capable of taking the Super Falcons to the next level.
Madugu and the technical crew will now focus on stabilizing the squad as they prepare for future challenges, while the NFF works towards securing a long-term replacement for Waldrum.
