Super Falcons record second win, defeat Uzbekistan in Turkey
Nigeria’s Super Falcons recorded their second win in the Turkish women’s Cup on Saturday as they defeated Uzbekistan 1-0 in their game at Antalya. The Falcons had earlier defeated Russian club, CSKA Moscow’s female team 1-0 thanks to a strike from Chiwendu Ihezuo, while Uzbekistan defeated Equatorial Guinea 5-0.
Coach Randy Waldrum declared his satisfaction with the side after the CSKA game and was true to his word as he stuck with the same eleven that started the game. His trust was rewarded with an improved display as the Falcons dominated the game against the Central Asian side. It wasn’t until the second minute of the second half that the Nigerian women finally found the back of the net. Francisca Ordega led a quick break and was brought down, but the referee chose to play the advantage and captain Asisat Oshoala picked up the ball on the right wing and continued with the attack before floating an inch-perfect cross into the path of the arriving Halimat Ayinde, who hit a first-time half volley into the top corner of the Uzbek goal for the only strike of the game.
The Falcons have now won both of Coach Waldrum’s games in charge, and now face fellow African side, Equatorial Guinea on Tuesday at 9am Nigerian time.
