Super Falcons Score First-Ever Goal Against France in 2-1 Friendly Loss

The Super Falcons of Nigeria made history despite losing 2-1 to the French women’s team in an international friendly played on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at the Stade Raymond Kopa in Angers, France.

France started strong, dominating possession and creating early chances. In the 8th minute, Marie-Antoinette Katoto found the net, but her goal was ruled offside. However, the hosts broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Katoto set up Eugénie Le Sommer for a close-range finish.

France doubled their lead in the 37th minute as Le Sommer turned provider for Amel Majri, who slotted the ball home.

The Super Falcons refused to back down, and their persistence paid off in added time of the first half. Ifeoma Onumonu, assisted by Monday Gift, scored Nigeria’s first-ever goal against France in several meetings.

In the second half, Nigeria pushed for an equaliser, with head coach Justin Madugu introducing Rinsola Babajide to bolster the attack. Despite their efforts, the French team held on for the win.

Although the Super Falcons couldn’t avoid defeat, breaking their scoring drought against France was a significant milestone, giving the team a positive takeaway from the match
