Super Falcons Set to Discover WAFCON 2024 Opponents
Nigeria’s Super Falcons will learn their group stage opponents for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Friday. The draw will take place at the Mohamed VI Football Complex in Sale, Morocco, setting the stage for another exciting tournament.
As nine-time champions, the Super Falcons remain the most successful team in African women’s football history. Since the tournament’s inception in 1998, they have won nine out of twelve editions, with only Equatorial Guinea (twice) and South Africa (in 2022) interrupting their dominance.
The 2024 WAFCON will feature 12 teams divided into three groups of four. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals. The competition is scheduled to run from July 5 to July 26, 2025.
Teams to Watch:
- Defending Champions: South Africa
- Hosts: Morocco
- Contenders: Zambia, Ghana, Algeria, Botswana
- Other Participants: DR Congo, Tunisia, Senegal, Tanzania, Mali
Despite recent coaching changes following Randy Waldrum’s exit, the Super Falcons remain strong contenders. The squad combines experienced players with young talents, making them a formidable force.
For Nigeria, this tournament is more than a competition – it’s a chance to reclaim their place as Africa’s top women’s football team and secure a historic 10th title.
Nigerian fans eagerly await Friday’s draw, hoping it marks the start of another victorious campaign for the Super Falcons.
