Super Falcons star Ashleigh Plumptre features as Chelsea Women hit Leicester women for 9

Chelsea women return to top of WSL for the first time this season

Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre was in action for her club Leicester City as they were walloped 9-0 by WSL Champions Chelsea in their match at the King Power Stadium.

Ashleigh Plumptre was handed the captain’s armband for the home side and started in central defence for them. Chelsea took no prisoners as they ran riot in the game. Goals from Guro Reiten, Sam Kerr, Bethany England and Aniek Nouwen put Chelsea women four goals up after only 12 minutes.

With the clock nearing the half hour mark, Chelsea scored their fifth of the match through striker England, although it came at some personal cost to Leicester captain Ashleigh Plumptre as she was hit on the head in the process of trying to stop the ball going in. The Nigerian international was taken off after 31 minutes and replaced by Sophie Barker.

Chelsea added a sixth in first-half stoppage time through Reiten before Kerr scored her side’s seventh in the second minute of the second half. Lauren James, sister of Chelsea defender Reece James, got on the scoresheet for Chelsea Women in the 88th minute to make it 8-0 with her first goal for the club before Jessie Fleming added a ninth for them.

Chelsea have now secured a return to the top of the WSL for the first time this season as they hold a lead over rivals Arsenal by just one point after 17 matches for both teams.

Ashleigh Plumptre was part of the Super Falcons side that recently secured qualification for the AWCON with an aggregate win over Ivory Coast Women.
